Neither this town nor its near neighbour, Midsomer Norton, is mentioned in the Domesday Book, but the area is believed to have been settled since the iron age, growing greatly in Roman times with the construction of the Fosse Way. In later years, the town won its wealth through mineral deposits and coal mining.
